If you've ever tried to change a habit, overcome anxiety, stop overthinking, or finally believe in yourself, you'll know that change isn't always as simple as deciding to do things differently.
Most of us have had that moment where we've promised ourselves, "This time will be different."
We'll start setting boundaries.
We'll stop choosing unavailable partners.
We'll stop procrastinating.
We'll stop doubting ourselves.
For a while, everything feels like it's working. Then, almost without realising it, we find ourselves slipping back into the very same thoughts, behaviours and patterns we were so determined to leave behind.
It can be frustrating, exhausting and deeply disheartening. Many people begin to wonder if they're simply destined to stay this way.
But what if the problem isn't your motivation?
What if you've been trying to create change in the wrong part of the mind?
Understanding the difference between the conscious and subconscious mind changes everything. Once you realise how your mind is designed to work, your struggles begin to make sense.
More importantly, you begin to understand that lasting change is not only possible, but completely natural when you work with your mind instead of against it.
The Conscious Mind Wants Change, but the Subconscious Mind Wants Familiarity

One of the biggest misconceptions in personal development is the belief that if we want something badly enough, we should simply be able to make it happen.
If only it were that easy.
Your conscious mind is the logical, thinking part of your brain. It sets goals, makes plans and decides what you would like your future to look like.
Your subconscious mind has a very different role.
Its job is to keep you safe by repeating what it already knows...It is constantly asking one question.
"What has kept us alive until now?"
The answer to that question becomes your automatic programming.
It does not judge whether those patterns are making you happy. It simply repeats what feels familiar because familiarity has always been associated with safety.
This is why someone who consciously longs for a loving relationship may repeatedly choose emotionally unavailable partners.
Why someone who dreams of starting a business continues to procrastinate.
Why someone who desperately wants to feel confident still hears an inner voice telling them they are not enough.
The subconscious is not trying to sabotage you, it is trying to protect you using information that may have been downloaded decades ago.
Your Brain Was Designed to Adapt

For many years scientists believed that once we reached adulthood, the brain became fixed...Thankfully, we now know that is not true.
The brain has an incredible ability called neuroplasticity, which simply means it can continue creating new neural pathways throughout our lives.
Every new skill you learn, every language you practise, every instrument you play and every habit you develop creates changes within the brain.
This is incredibly hopeful because it reminds us that change is possible at any age.
However, there is an important distinction that often gets overlooked.
Just because the brain is capable of change does not mean the subconscious mind automatically lets go of old emotional programming.
You can understand exactly why a belief is limiting you and still feel emotionally trapped by it. That is because understanding happens in the conscious mind, while emotional conditioning lives much deeper.
Why Positive Thinking Is Often Not Enough

I cannot tell you how many clients have arrived in my therapy room feeling defeated because they have already tried everything.
They've read the books.
They've listened to the podcasts.
They've repeated affirmations every morning.
They've filled journals with positive thoughts.
Yet somehow nothing seems to stick.
There is nothing wrong with positive thinking...Affirmations can be incredibly supportive and mindset work has its place. But imagine trying to grow beautiful flowers in a garden that is completely overrun with weeds.
You could scatter fresh seeds across the surface every single day and for a short time, some flowers might begin to grow.
Eventually though, the weeds would reclaim the space because their roots are still alive beneath the soil.
This is exactly how many people approach change...They try to plant new beliefs without first removing the old ones. The result is temporary improvement followed by familiar patterns returning once again.
Real transformation begins beneath the surface.
Why Hypnosis Creates Such Powerful Change

One of the most misunderstood tools in modern therapy is hypnosis.
Many people imagine stage shows where participants lose control or behave in unusual ways.
Therapeutic hypnosis is nothing like that.
In reality, hypnosis is simply a naturally occurring state of focused attention and deep relaxation.
You have probably experienced it many times without even realising.
Have you ever driven somewhere familiar and suddenly realised you cannot remember part of the journey?
Or become so absorbed in a film that you completely lost track of time?
Perhaps you've been reading a book and no longer noticed the world around you.
These are all examples of naturally occurring trance states.
During hypnosis, the busy analytical mind begins to quieten, allowing us to communicate directly with the subconscious.
This is important because the subconscious responds very differently to information than the conscious mind.
Instead of trying to force change through willpower, hypnosis allows us to work with the part of the mind where the original programming exists.
Why Understanding the Root Cause Matters

While hypnosis can be incredibly effective, I believe the deepest and most lasting transformation comes from understanding why a pattern was created in the first place.
Every subconscious belief began as an adaptation.
Perhaps a child learned that staying quiet prevented conflict.
Perhaps achieving highly became the only way they felt worthy of love.
Perhaps people pleasing once protected them from rejection.
These behaviours were never signs of weakness...They were intelligent survival strategies created by a younger version of you doing the very best they could with the resources they had.
The problem is that the subconscious does not automatically update those strategies as we grow older.
It continues running them long after they are no longer needed and this is why uncovering the root of a belief is so powerful.
Once the subconscious understands that the original danger has passed, it no longer needs to keep repeating the same protective response.
Why I Use Rapid Transformational Therapy

This understanding is one of the reasons I chose to train in Rapid Transformational Therapy.
RTT combines the deep access of hypnosis with therapeutic techniques that help uncover the original experiences that shaped limiting beliefs.
Rather than simply encouraging clients to think differently, we gently explore where the belief began, why it was created and whether it is still serving them today.
When the subconscious finally understands the origin of a pattern, something remarkable often happens.
The emotional charge begins to dissolve... The belief no longer feels like an unquestionable truth.
It simply becomes an old story that has reached the end of its purpose and from that place, creating new beliefs feels natural rather than forced.
Instead of fighting against yourself, you begin working with your own mind.
You Are Not Becoming Someone New

One of the greatest misconceptions about healing is that it changes who you are.
In my experience, the opposite is true.
Healing removes everything that was never truly you...It strips away the fears you inherited.
The beliefs you absorbed.
The survival strategies you no longer need.
The masks you learned to wear.
Beneath all of that is the version of you that has always existed.
The confident version.
The creative version.
The peaceful version.
The version that knows their worth without having to prove it.
Healing is not about becoming someone else... It is about remembering who you were before life convinced you to forget.
Lasting Change Is Possible

If you have spent years repeating the same patterns, please know this...Your past does not have to dictate your future.
Your subconscious may have learned certain beliefs during childhood, but it is capable of learning new ones.
The patterns you have been living are not fixed personality traits; they are programs, and
programs can be updated.
You do not have to spend the rest of your life fighting against yourself.
When you understand your subconscious, work with it compassionately and heal the root rather than the symptom, lasting change becomes possible.
Not because you forced yourself to become someone different.
But because you finally gave yourself permission to become who you have been all along.
A Few Questions to Reflect On

As you finish reading, I invite you to sit with these questions.
What is one pattern that has repeated itself throughout different chapters of your life?
If that pattern was originally created to protect you, what might it have been trying to protect you from?
And if you no longer needed that protection, who would you become?
The answers may reveal more than you expect, and they could be the first step towards creating the lasting change you've been searching for.
Ready to stop managing symptoms and start healing the root?
Through Rapid Transformational Therapy, we work directly with the subconscious mind to uncover and transform the beliefs that have been keeping you stuck, creating lasting change from the inside out.
